Get to know Devyn – one of the photographers helping us #BreakTheStereotype

As we launch #BreakTheStereotype, the first in a new wave of initiatives to challenge old conventions in single malt, we wanted to champion the people who collaborated with us to bring it to life.

Tackling who the whisky drinker is was the first convention we wanted to change. So we set out to celebrate the whisky community and highlight the diversity of our audience. We knew straight away that photographers Danny Kasirye and Devyn Galindo would be perfect in helping us capture these people. We were inspired by them both because they are pioneers and forge originality in everything they do. That’s something that we at The Glenlivet also aspire to – we’re not afraid to break traditions in order to move things forward and set new standards. We sat down with them to hear their thoughts on the project and whether the whisky world today represents them and their values.

Get to know Devyn!

Devyn is a Queer, Chicanx, artist and photographer based in Los Angeles, California. “Sweet Pea”, Devyn’s ’78 VW camper van, works as a traveling studio as they document queer stories across the country. It’s both a travelog of their journey as well as the creation of an ongoing visual project documenting the stories of LGBTQ folks from around the US.

What inspired you to get involved in this campaign?

The cast was incredible and very refreshing to see lots of young queer faces and such a beautiful diverse mix. I love that The Glenlivet is trying to shake things up!

How do you feel about the way whisky drinkers are portrayed in mainstream media and how have these perceptions changed throughout this campaign?

Whisky drinkers are typically seen as very square men in suits. It was inspiring to create from a place that was aiming to offer more vibrancy and more life than what we have typically seen whisky drinkers portrayed.

What makes your photography style original, and where do you draw your inspiration?

I’m a big believer that nothing is original, we are all channeling energy that came before us and after us so we are just vessels to deliver the messages of right now. I draw my inspiration from my community and nature.

What is your favorite Whisky drink?

I’m a sucker for a Whisky Sour. So delicious.

What has been your career highlight to date?

Being on a fully Chicanx set, which has only happened once in my career to date! That was a very powerful experience. My highlights are also fostering the next generation of image makers and getting to see more diversity behind the camera as well.

With Danny and Devyn’s incredible talents behind the lens, we were able to work together to shake up the outdated perceptions of what a whisky drinker looks like, and celebrate the unique whisky drinkers of today.
