About The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 when George Smith legally established his distillery in the remote and wild valley of Glenlivet within the Speyside region of Scotland. Since then, The Glenlivet has been known for its incredibly smooth, well balanced, and fruity flavor. As a Single Malt Scotch Whisky, The Glenlivet is produced in one single distillery in Scotland and made with 100% malted barley.

Our story begins in the Livet valley in Scotland. Remote and isolated, this terrain was ideal for illicit distillation and is where our founder, George Smith, learned his craft. In 1824, George was granted the first legal distilling license in the parish of Glenlivet. After this, he battled against all odds, risking life and liberty to establish his smooth and fruity whisky as the definitive taste of the Speyside region of Scotland.
In 1871, George passed away and the job of continuing his life’s work fell to his youngest son, John Gordon Smith. And, in 1884, with other competitors desperate to take the name ‘Glenlivet’ for themselves, John established the brand as the one and only ‘The Glenlivet.’
What George started continues to inspire our makers to create whiskies that are enjoyed by all far and wide. To learn more, visit our interactive timeline.

The Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made with a six-step process that involves malting, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. We take water from Josie’s Well, a natural spring supplied with water from the River Livet, which is nicknamed ”the smooth flowing one.” Learn more about how scotch is made in Speyside.

As a Single Malt Scotch Whisky, our products are aged for a minimum of three years in oak casks. Each cask and length of maturation varies by expression. Our pioneering spirit has inspired us to continue pushing things forward in the whisky category, introducing a unique selective cask finish to some of our expressions. We recommend storing our products upright in a cool, odor-free, well-ventilated environment away from direct sunlight. This will ensure they remain in optimum condition.

An unopened bottle of The Glenlivet, if stored in a cool, ventilated room away from direct sunlight, should stay good for years.
If you’ve opened your bottle, we recommend enjoying within three to six months. While whisky doesn’t spoil in the traditional sense, you may notice subtle changes to the flavor after this time due to oxidation.
How to Enjoy

The Glenlivet is a smooth and balanced Single Malt Scotch Whisky that can be enjoyed neat, with water, or served with ice. We would suggest that if you’re going to use ice, use a large block of ice that melts slowly.
However, if you prefer cocktails, don’t worry! The Glenlivet helps elevate classic cocktails with a richer depth of flavor. Click here to discover our favorite cocktails.

When it comes to whisky, the flavors in the bottle are just the beginning. Looking to go above and beyond? Pairing your favorite expression with certain foods or mixing it into the right cocktail can unlock a whole new experience for your palate. Discover our helpful guide here.

The shape, weight, and texture of glassware can all add to the experience of enjoying your whisky.
If you’re hosting a whisky tasting, discover how to organize it like a professional. A tulip glass will help fully appreciate the aromas and flavors of The Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The gently curved shape traps the aromas at the bottom of the glass before releasing them into the small area at the top. The stable stem base allows the liquid to be swirled, further enhancing both smell and taste.
If you prefer to sip The Glenlivet neat or on the rocks, we recommend an elevated, modern rocks glass.
And, for cocktails, we have recommended glassware for each of our cocktails within our collection page.
