Campbeltown single malts tend to be full-bodied, renowned for their depth of flavour and slightly salty finish. Peat adds a hint of flavour similar to that found in Islay malt.
Highlands
The largest of the Scotch whisky regions with towering peaks, gentle glens, lochs and coastal scenery. Typical whiskies from this region have a rich, robust and intense taste.
Islay
This island is often lashed by wind and rain. Islay is rich in peat, which has a huge influence on its whisky – leading to strong, smoky, peaty, salty seaweed flavours.
Lowlands
This is the most southern whisky region in Scotland. Malts in the Lowlands are lighter in colour and have a more delicate, floral and fragrant character.
Speyside
More than half of Scotland’s distilleries are based in Speyside.
But our founder, George Smith, was the one who started it all as the first licensed distiller to make whisky in the Livet Valley in 1824, and now more than half of Scotland’s distilleries are based here. Speyside is all rolling hills and pine forest, with distilleries clustering loosely along the salmon-rich, crystal-clear waters of the River Spey.
Whiskies tend to be rich, fruity, and floral.
a journey through
THE LIVET VALLEY
the distillery
The Glenlivet Distillery is where it all began. Since 1824, we’ve produced exceptional single malt Scotch whisky at our home in Speyside. Our distillery was renovated in 2021, with new rooms added dedicated to telling the story of our heritage and craftsmanship. We now welcome visitors from around the world.
THE RIVER LIVET
The Glenlivet means ‘The Valley of the Smooth Flowing One’ in Gaelic and is a reference to the Livet River which runs through the area of Speyside where our distillery is located.
JOSIE’S WELL
In George Smith’s day, The Glenlivet was the envy of other distilleries, coveted by smugglers and high society alike. But no other distillery could ever copy its taste, even if they tried. We have the springs high above our distillery to thank for that, especially the crystal clear, mineral rich water of Josie’s Well.
SMUGGLER’S TRAILS
The Speyside landscape was once a battleground for illicit distillers and excisemen. Explore the three paths of the Smuggler’s Trails, which start at the distillery, to give you a feel for The Glenlivet’s early years.
The North Coast
The journey from grain to glass always begins with barley. The North Coast of Scotland is the perfect climate for growing this – with long summer days and untypically dry (for Scotland) soil.
