Few fruits balance brightness and bite quite like grapefruit. Its sharp citrus tang can cut through rich flavours, mellow into sweetness, or stand bold on its own — which makes it one of the most versatile bases in mixology. From sunlit spritzes to winter warmers in need of a refreshing lift, grapefruit cocktails are a striking way to bring depth and vibrancy to whisky.
Here are some of our favourite grapefruit serves, each with its own character — whether you’re welcoming friends, pouring a pre-dinner aperitif, or simply looking for a more adventurous alternative to your usual dram.
Grapefruit Paloma
The Grapefruit Paloma takes a Mexican icon and dresses it in Speyside elegance. Traditionally made with tequila, this version swaps in the smooth balance of The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve. Grapefruit juice, a squeeze of lime and just enough sugar syrup give the drink a zesty, bittersweet profile that’s beautifully effortless.
You’ll need 50ml The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, 45ml grapefruit juice, 10ml lime juice and 15ml sugar syrup. Shake the Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, grapefruit juice, lime juice and sugar syrup together. Strain into highball filled with ice and top with soda water. Garnish with grapefruit wedge.
It’s a crowd-pleasing welcome drink for summer afternoons — light, refreshing, and just bold enough to carry through to evening.
Caribbean Fire
For those who like their cocktails with a kick, the Caribbean Fire blends The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve with pink grapefruit soda, pineapple juice and a touch of hot sauce. It’s a fiery mix that dances between sweet, sharp and spicy.
Shake together 50ml The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve, 25ml pineapple juice, 2 tsp Smokin’ Hot Pistols Hot Sauce, 15ml lime juice and 10ml agave nectar and strain into a tall glass over ice. Top with Pink Grapefruit Soda and stir lightly.
This is a cocktail made for autumn or winter gatherings, when a little heat goes a long way. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and thin slice of red chilli, and watch as it becomes the talking point of the night.
Grapefruit Whisky Fizz
Effervescent, bright and celebratory, a Grapefruit Whisky Fizz turns a classic drink into something unexpected. Fresh grapefruit juice and simple syrup bring a tart-sweet balance to the Scotch, topped with sparkling water or soda for a lively finish. For extra smoothness, shake with egg white to create a silky foam that softens the citrus bite.
Served in an elegant coupe or flute, it’s a natural aperitif — light enough to awaken the palate, with just enough bitterness to intrigue.
Grapefruit Sour
The Whisky Sour is timeless, but a Grapefruit Sour gives it sharper edges. Start with our Whisky Sour recipe and switch lemon for grapefruit to heighten its citrus backbone.
The bitterness reins in the sweetness while the tartness adds extra refreshment. It’s a perfect match for a relaxed brunch spread or early evening sipping when you want something classic with a twist.
Whisky and Grapefruit Soda
Sometimes, the most memorable grapefruit cocktails are also the simplest. Pour 50ml The Glenlivet 12 Year Old over ice, top with good-quality grapefruit soda, and garnish with a citrus wedge. No shaking, no fuss — just crisp refreshment in a glass.
Ideal for outdoor get-togethers or lazy weekend afternoons, this serve lets the orchard fruit notes of the whisky shine against the soda’s sharp, bittersweet fizz.
Grapefruit Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned thrives on subtle reinventions, and grapefruit is one of its finest twists. Take the classic recipe, then add grapefruit bitters or garnish with a peel for a bittersweet lift that feels fresh but familiar.
It’s a drink best lingered over after dinner, particularly alongside a square of dark chocolate or a well-chosen cheese board.
Whether it’s a sparkling aperitif before dinner, a bold serve for cocktail hour, or a pared-back drink by the fire, grapefruit has a way of transforming whisky into something sharper, brighter, and more memorable.
