Get to know Danny – one of the photographers helping us #BreakTheStereotype

As we launch #BreakTheStereotype, the first in a new wave of initiatives to challenge old conventions in single malt, we wanted to champion the people who collaborated with us to bring it to life.

Tackling who the whisky drinker is was the first convention we wanted to change. So we set out to celebrate the whisky community and highlight the diversity of our audience. We knew straight away that photographers Danny Kasirye and Devyn Galindo would be perfect in helping us capture these people. We were inspired by them both because they are pioneers and forge originality in everything they do. That’s something that we at The Glenlivet also aspire to – we’re not afraid to break traditions in order to move things forward and set new standards. We sat down with them to hear their thoughts on the project and whether the whisky world today represents them and their values.

Meet Danny…

A Ugandan-British photographer and director based in London, Danny’s photography always aims to promote a truly diverse view of the world.

So Danny, tell us a little bit about yourself:

I’m a fashion and portrait photographer from London. A bit of a nerd and film buff who also happens to love sport and a good drink!

What inspired you to get involved in this project?

The focus on diversity and changing the image of the whisky drinker is what really drew me to this campaign with The Glenlivet!

How do you feel about the way whisky drinkers are portrayed in mainstream media and how have these perceptions changed whilst working with us?

I feel like in advertising traditionally whisky has been marketed to older, white men…even though many people of different races, ages and genders regularly enjoy it. This has never been reflected in campaigns, which is why this one for The Glenlivet is important because it presents a more diverse view of who the whisky drinker is and can be.

What makes your photography style original, and where do you draw your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from people, which is why I fell in love with taking portraits! I’m also heavily influenced by cinema and try to have a cinematic visual approach to my shoots. Bringing out genuine authenticity and personality within people is what helps set me apart.

Which bottle of The Glenlivet is your favorite?

I really enjoy The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve! I love cocktails, so it’s fantastic in a Mai Tai!

What has been your career highlight to date?

This is a hard one! But it might have to be either my first GQ cover with John Boyega or shooting Michaela Coel for the cover of ELLE. Two massive stars whose careers I’ve admired and I got to shoot them for two of the biggest magazines in the world!

With Danny and Devyn’s incredible talents behind the lens, we were able to work together to shake up the outdated perceptions of what a whisky drinker looks like, and celebrate the unique whisky drinkers of today.
